2009 Playlist
Monday, December 21st, 2009
Since I’m no longer at a newspaper, no captions this year, just the songs; tracks from 2009 that I really enjoyed, in a playlist order for you to enjoy. For some reason I couldn’t find Baby Teeth’s “Big Schools,” so that should be the last track on the list.
Oh, and that second Camera Obscura entry should be this. But I’m a shitty Internet person and can’t figure out how to replace it.

My 10- I mean 12- favorite movies of the decade (OK, technically 13)
Wednesday, December 16th, 2009
Not a “best of” list and certainly nothing critical, just the 12 movies that I enjoyed and connected with the most over the past 10 years. Yeah, I know lists are dumb but why should professional writers (a profession I can no longer claim) have all the fun? Time permitting I’ll do albums, songs and comics shortly, but for now, the movies, because, after all, I am in movie school.
I went with 12 because I really wanted to include the two that just missed the top 10. Also, I haven’t had enough time to really digest and appreciate “Inglourious Basterds”… but I suspect it’ll weasel its way onto this list as time goes on. Likewise when I finally get around to rewatching “Goodbye, Lenin.”
So here we go…

12 High Fidelity- Rob Gordon is the guy John Cusack was born to play, and in some ways has been playing his whole career. Read the rest of this entry »

… or does the CGI Alvin from “Alvin and the Chipmunks” look like Turtle from “Entourage”?

I wonder if it’s intentional…

“Becca’s Box”: 1 nomination, 0 win
Monday, December 14th, 2009
“Becca’s Box” played Saturday at the University of Southern California. Response was better than I had hoped for. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the movie– and all the other awesome second semester movies.
There were also two legendary parties Saturday night and Sunday night. Awards (which were generally silly) were given out Sunday night– “Becca’s Box” was nominated for “most quotable,” but lost to the far-more-quotable “Closed Doors” by my classmate and friend Josh Tate. “Solo,” which I did cinematography on, took home an award for best outsourced sequence (or something to that extent) for a “flight through the universe” opening. No, I didn’t actually shoot in space.
I’ll be in DC between Christmas and New Years with “Becca’s Box” for those that want to check it out. I’m also going to start entering it into some film festivals, so keep checking back for more info on which shitty theater you’ll be able to see my shitty movie in.

“BECCA’S BOX”!!! 2:30 p.m.!!! Saturday!!! Norris!!!
Wednesday, December 9th, 2009
If you live in the greater Los Angeles area consider this your invitation to see what USC considers my first film (never mind I made two last semester and they’re actually digital videos…).
It’s called “Becca’s Box.” Program description of the movie reads “The Vagina Dialogs.”If you like “Assholes” you’ll probably like the jokes here. Starring the exceptionally talented Danny Fernandez, Alexa Kahn and Madeline Walter.
2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, Norris Theater at USC. If you don’t know where Norris Theater is here’s a campus map– Norris is in quadrant E4. http://www.usc.edu/private/ about/visit_usc/USC_UPC_map_ gray.pdf
Some stills from the movie below:

CONGRATS, ZAC!!!
Sunday, December 6th, 2009
Zac Crockett, artist extraordinaire behind “Anyone But Virginia” is concurrently posting pages on his deviantart.com and drunkduck.com pages. Deviantart.com recently featured a two page spread teaser from issue 4, titled “1996″ as it’s Daily Deviant. For digital art this is basically the same thing as having your work displayed in the front of the Smithsonian. It’s a big deal and a big honor, both of which entirely deserved. He’s had nearly 10,000 hits in the past couple days. I’m really privileged to work with Zac, he’s phenomenal. Check it out here. You might remember the page from the pencils, which I posted a while back.
